The only genuine off-roader in our fleet, and the honest answer is that most visitors do not need one. Everything in the resort corridor — Macao, Bayahíbe, Higüey, the toll road to Santo Domingo — is fine in a small car. The Rubicon earns its price on the roads that are described as tracks: the climbs behind Miches after rain, the mountain route to Salto El Limón, the last kilometre to a beach that the guidebook calls remote. Four doors, five seats, an automatic gearbox and a proper low-range transfer case, not a crossover pretending. It also drinks fuel, parks like a wardrobe and rides firmly on the motorway. Take it for what it does, not for how it looks in the hotel car park.
