Note the arithmetic that almost nobody points out: VIP Plus on departure ($106.20) is cheaper than the arrival service ($118) and gives you more — a lounge, a shower and a swimming pool instead of twenty minutes of walking. If you can only justify one of the two, buy the departure one.

What VIP Fast Track actually does on arrival

The service is booked and paid for before you fly, not on the day. You submit your flight number, airline and passenger names in advance, and the airport assigns a staff member to your booking.

When your aircraft parks, that person is waiting at the bottom of the aircraft stairs holding a sign with your name. From there:

1. You are taken separately from the other passengers, in many cases by golf cart, rather than boarding the shared shuttle bus to the terminal.
2. You are processed at a private immigration desk instead of joining the main hall.
3. Your checked luggage is collected and brought to you.
4. You are escorted out to your waiting ground transportation.

Ground transportation is not included in the airport’s VIP price. That is a separate booking, and it is the single most common misunderstanding travelers have about this service.

The three departure tiers, explained properly

Most travelers overpay on departure simply because they do not know that three separate products exist.

Comfort — $30 with tax

The fast track lane through security and immigration. That is all: no lounge, no escort, no food, no pool. It is also the best value per dollar that this airport sells, because the two queues it removes are precisely the ones that cost you time. If your budget is tight and you only want the practical benefit, this is the one to buy.

VIP Plus — $106.20 with tax

Fast track through security and immigration, plus full access to the VIP lounge: seating, soft drinks, alcohol, coffee, snacks, Wi-Fi, flight information screens, private washrooms, showers and the pool. No reservation is strictly required for the lounge, and pets are not admitted.

Premium — $236 with tax

Everything in VIP Plus, and in addition a representative meets you at the airport entrance and stays with you continuously: to the airline check-in counter, through security, through immigration and into the lounge. You are never left to work out a step on your own. If you are travelling with elderly parents, small children, a wheelchair or an unusual amount of luggage, this is what the extra $130 actually buys. If you are two adults with carry-ons, it is not worth it over VIP Plus.

This is the detail that makes PUJ unusual among international airports. The VIP lounge in Terminal B has an outdoor rooftop swimming pool with an infinity edge looking straight out over the runway, plus showers to rinse off before you board.

In practice it means you can have a final swim with a drink in your hand, watch aircraft take off in front of you, shower, change and walk to your gate. There are very few airports anywhere in the world where that is possible, and it is the strongest single argument for spending your money on the departure side rather than the arrival side.

One critical caveat: the pool is in Terminal B only. Terminal B serves airlines including American Airlines, Delta, Copa, British Airways and Air France. If your flight departs from Terminal A you get a lounge and an outdoor terrace, but no pool. Check which terminal your airline uses before you buy VIP Plus expecting to swim.

What real travelers say about it

The service has a strong but not spotless record, and the pattern in the reviews is worth reading before you book.

On TripAdvisor, a traveler from Montreal posting as Amelie, who has used the arrival service several times, describes the entire process from leaving the aircraft to leaving the airport as 15 to 20 minutes. A reviewer from Bedford in the United Kingdom posting as Tinkz1 confirms the mechanics: the representative “was waiting at the foot of the steps,” and they walked ahead of the queues. A honeymooning traveler posting as Violet S was out of the airport in under 30 minutes from the moment she stepped off the plane. A traveler from Philadelphia posting as PhillyShaney puts it bluntly: “The cost is worth it.”

The complaints are just as instructive. A reviewer from Pennsylvania posting as bbwbgb paid roughly $241 for two people and found the lounge catering disappointing — “stale finger sandwiches” against much higher expectations. A traveler posting as HappyTravelerLAX reported limited beverage servings and premium alcohol charged separately. And the worst case, from a traveler posting as Stephen M, was a service cancelled 24 hours before arrival while travelling with an infant — booked through a third-party reseller with nobody locally accountable.

The same debate runs constantly in the r/PuntaCana and r/AllInclusiveResorts subreddits and in the large Punta Cana traveler groups on Facebook, where the recurring questions are always the same three: how much it really costs, which company to buy it from, and whether it is worth it at all. The consensus that emerges is consistent with the reviews above: the airport service itself performs, and almost every horror story traces back to who sold it rather than to the service.

What VIP Fast Track will not do: the Julio Iglesias case

There is a persistent belief that a VIP package softens the rules at the border. It does not, and the clearest proof involves one of the most famous singers alive.

In mid-January 2024, Julio Iglesias flew into Punta Cana from the Bahamas on his own private jet — a level of arrival privilege above any Fast Track package on sale. In his luggage were strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, cherries, tomatoes, beetroot, celery, beans, spinach, lettuce, mushrooms, arugula and chicken meat: 42.16 kilograms of undeclared food. The Plant Quarantine Inspection Service of the Dominican Ministry of Agriculture stopped him, held him for questioning and seized the entire load. Local reporting noted it was not the first time. The incident was covered by Euronews, Dominican Today and the Spanish-language press including The Olive Press.

The lesson is precise. VIP Fast Track moves you to the front of the queue. It does not move you outside Dominican law. Your passport is still checked, your bags still pass customs and agricultural quarantine, and undeclared meat, fruit, vegetables, seeds and plants will still be confiscated regardless of what you paid. You are buying time, not immunity.

There are websites built to resemble the Punta Cana airport’s own site. They are not necessarily fraudulent — many deliver the service perfectly well — but they are resellers, and their prices for the identical airport product can be substantially higher than the airport’s published rates. Some quote $160 or more per person for the same arrival service the airport sells at $118 with tax.

Two habits protect you. First, know the real numbers before you shop; they are in the table above. Second, be suspicious of any page that presents itself as “the official airport VIP page” while showing a price well above those figures.

The e-ticket that is free but is widely sold

Every passenger entering and leaving the Dominican Republic must complete the electronic entry and exit form known as the e-ticket, and must be able to show the QR code it generates. Both directions. The departure one is forgotten constantly, and travelers get stopped at check-in because of it.

The e-ticket is completely free, and the only legitimate place to complete it is the Dominican migration authority’s own portal: eticket.migracion.gob.do

A whole industry of third-party sites charges $20 to $60 to fill in that free government form on your behalf, often while looking semi-official. Fill it in yourself, on the link above, and pay nothing. Do it a few days before each flight, not at the airport.
