Exciting things to do in Santo Domingo

If you are into something more than only relaxing on a beach, check out these hot spots in Santo Domingo. The city itself is a mix of the Old World charm and modern Latin flair, and these places are must visit.

The 3 Eyes National Park

This place truly is a wonder of Nature — there is a whole underground world with its amazing nature and crystal clear cenotes. For $1 you can take a ride across the lake on a raft and find yourself in a mysterious cave which leades you to the secret lake away from prying eyes.

Las Damas Street / Colonial Zone

When you walk down Las Damas street you literally are walking through history. It was the first street built on this side of the Atlantic, full of palaces, XVIth. Century buildings and museums. Fun for couples, solo and especially for families. Find lots of beautiful photo spots on this walk.

Alcazar de Colon

Alcazar de Colon is the oldest royal residence in all Americas, with its authentic interior and furniture. It was built under the Diego Columbus (Christofer's son) orders as a home he shared with his wife Maria de Toledo in the early 16 c. It's a two-story building — one side oriented at Ozama river and the other side towards Plaza España.

Columbus Lighthouse

One of the greatest monuments in the world where, according to the Dominican Republic, remains of Christopher Columbus rest. The lighthouse is lit only on major public holidays, and its light is visible for miles, burning in the sky in the shape of a cross. The monument was consecrated by Pope John Paul II in 1992. His “popemobile” is still located nearby.

Teleferico

Teleferico (cable car) in SD was not built for tourists, but as the public transport service for those who live in barrios (poor neighborhoods). This is a totally safe way to observe barrios from above. You'll see how people live, their schools, small churches, colmados (local stores), tiny streets, rivers and bridges. Teleferico is clean and very cheap (less than a dollar for a round trip). It’s the best way to see the other face of one of the most contrasting capitals of the world.

Pat’e Palo

The first tavern of the New World is also located here. Opened since 1505, this place keeps the spirit of the good old days, where pirates of the Caribbean could knock back a shot of rum. Nowadays, you can have lunch or just a cup of coffee with a pleasant view of plaza España and Alcazar de Colon.
